Elementary Kids Learn to Plan, Shop, Cook and Clean
And an art teacher shares her joy, and more...
When I was a kid long ago, school custodians were among my favorite people because they were always kind to me. I’ll say the same for the custodians in the Knoxville School District. I don’t know all of them (yet!) but the ones I do know work hard, and love and guide students to the best of their abilities when given the opportunity. Some of them have become my friends, and I’m grateful for the time they have spent with me this year.
Art teacher Evy Beal was at school one day last week. She tells me how she came to be in the position, why she wanted to be an art teacher, what she enjoys about it, why it’s important to teach art, and much more.
I asked her what the best part of her job is:
Seeing the kids be proud of their artwork…when they finish that artwork and they say, ‘oh my goodness. This was the best thing ever. I never knew that I could make this,’ and just their excitement makes me excited about it. And that's why I do it.

I had a wonderful opportunity to follow along while staff worked with students to plan a meal, go to Fareway to shop, come back to the High School, cook the meal, and clean. I had an appointment and couldn’t stay for the whole event, but was able to meet the group at Fareway and then back in the classroom kitchen at the high school.
In the video below, Knoxville Fareway Manager Perry Hager gives the group a warm welcome.
Below are some photos of the shopping experience.

And here they are leaving the store to head back to cook!
The kids learned lessons of effective shopping, including making sure they had the correct ingredients, had some math lessons, and how to evaluate the quality of products, and making price comparisons.
Sometimes the staff would teach simple lessons, but the best part for me was when students engaged in the decision making. Fareway staff were most helpful too, engaging the students in conversations so the students could make the best choice.
Below are some photos from the kitchen.
