After 29 years of teaching middle school math, Jim Uitermarkt now teaches Career Exploration. He says the transition has been good for him and the students enjoy exploring different career options. I stopped by his office one day and saw he was teaching students magazine layout. You can see the outline of the class behind him.
He tells me:
The magazine project was over the Information Solutions Career Cluster. The students picked one career from the cluster, researched, wrote an article about their research, and then put their article into a magazine article format along with designing a cover. All of this was produced through the Canva app. The students are getting very comfortable using Canva and learning and teaching each other more every day.
That students are learning Canva is wonderful! In our graphic-driven online world, Canva is the tool many professionals use, and the ability to use Canva could help students in ANY career. Here is my full interview with Mr. Uitermarkt:
Below are a couple of magazine covers the students created.
It’s National Poetry Month, and Tamra Stevenson has held two interesting poetry sessions that students and I enjoyed very much. In the above video Tamra reads a challenging poem about what we look like—but in two different ways. Very thought provoking. It sure got us thinking and led to a positive conclusion.
She then explains an exercise where students take pages from books and select words to create poetry. The students completed the exercise with some interesting results. Below are two videos where students read their poems and we have a brief discussion.
It was popcorn all day Thursday at Northstar. Students had been on their best behavior to win enough tickets to earn the popcorn, but once again Mr. Keitges’ Evil Twin with his magic mustache stole the tickets, and the students and staff had to respond to the challenge to defeat the Evil Twin! Mr. Keitges has the story!
